What is Summer Advantage?

An opportunity to adjust gradually to the new academic demands of college life ...
Summer Advantage is a time for you to begin the transition to college life through tailored programming, peer and professional support, and planned recreational activities. Become familiar with the WSU campus and learn the most effective techniques for academic achievement through time management, study skills, and leadership workshops.

  • Earn seven college credits in four weeks.
  • Fulfill a Humanities [H] and a communication [C] general education requirement [GER].
  • Discover campus resources.
  • Develop leadership skills.
  • Explore WSU in a supportive, academic, residential program.
  • Participate in organized activities.
  • Build a community of friends.
  • Make WSU your home away from home.
  • Enrich your life through University Recreation.

Who should attend Summer Advantage?
Anyone who has been accepted to Washington State University as a freshman beginning fall 2008.

What are the dates for Summer Advantage?
June 29 - July 25, 2008

What class is offered for Summer Advantage 2008?
Students enrolled in Summer Advantage will be registered in two courses (7 credits):

  • Music 262 (Rock Music: History and Social Analysis), which explores the various stages of rock 'n' roll, from Elvis to Motown to the British Invasion. The class covers not only the progression of rock music, but the substantial political and social issues that go along with it, including the Vietnam War and the assassinations of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Human Development 205 ( Communication in Human Relations), which will help you develop an understanding of human behavior and learning skills in communication and leadership. Summer Advantage student will use the ropes course twice during the program to cement those concepts taught in the classroom. Additionally, students will put on a community service project which will be graded as part of the course work.
