Summer Activities
Student Recreation Center
The Student Recreation Center provides opportunities to participate in both sport and leisure activities, including basketball, swimming, cardio, weight lifting and massage therapy. Summer Advantage students are automatic members of the center and can go there to just work out, get a trainer or sign up for classes. Some popular instructional fitness classes include yoga, martial arts, dance and aerobic strengthening.
Outdoor Recreation Center
The Outdoor Recreation Center provides outdoor enthusiasts with all the skills, information, and gear needed for an adventurous journey. You can find trips to take during the summer through the ORC or learn how to rock climb on the rock wall. Summer Advantage participants may also take part in a Cougar Adventure during a weekend in mid-July.
Intramural Sports
The summer intramural program offers about 20 different activities including softball, soccer, and basketball. There are a number of activities offered this summer from team sports to dual and individual activities. Each sporting event offers both a competitive and recreational league that participants can sign up for based on their skill level.
Outdoor Challenge Course
Challenge is a branch of experiential education utilizing specialized activities to accelerate learning, allowing participants to explore and practice new skills and styles. By participating in Challenge, your group will develop teamwork and interpersonal communication skills. Summer Advantage may have a chance to participate in this experience.
Student Clubs and Organizations
There are many student clubs on campus that may be of interest to you. Do you belly dance? Would you like to learn how to play rugby? With 329 registered student organizations, most students can find some way to be involved at WSU. Statistics show that students who are involved are more successful. Summer Advantage participants can get connected to the different clubs and find out about ways to get involved in the campus community.
Pullman Community Events
During the summer you will want to catch the six-week 'Concerts in the Park' series on Wednesdays. Each outdoor musical evening begins with a buffet dinner catered by a local restaurant.
Pullman is part of a Fourth of July circuit celebrated in and around the communities of the Palouse. Several communities have coordinated their events, so you can spend the day "town-hopping" from one community to another and not miss the fun. For example, for many years now, Moscow, Idaho (just 8 miles east of Pullman) has started their fireworks display several minutes after Pullman's display ended, so those who wanted to could catch both spectacles. An absolute must see is the Fourth Of July Parade in Johnson, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it community just a few miles south of Pullman. The main street is about a mile long with the parade of homemade gadgets, local kids, modified farm machinery, outlandish costumes and always great humor running its length and doubling back on itself. Some of the entries have become traditional, while others change every year. As always, the parade is made up of whoever shows up on time, with no clearly planned or organized events. So, you can just as easily watch the fun as join in! Pullman's contribution to Fourth of July starts at 5pm at Sunnyside Park and is topped off with a brilliant fireworks display later in the evening. Summer Advantage students will definitely have the opportunity to be there for the festivities.
