2010 Summer Advantage Courses

All Summer Advantage students take the classes below.
These classes are closed to other WSU summer session students.
Class size is limited to 30 students in order to have productive class discussion and to facilitate interpersonal interaction with class members and the instructors.
Courses are GER requirements for most majors. If you are a running start or Honors College student it is possible the courses won't help you progress in fulfilling your graduation requirements.

 

Music 262 - Rock Music: History and Social Analysis [H]

3 credits

1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.OR 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Learn about history and analyze rock music related to its African American origins, its societal role and its diverse development and impact. The course will be taught by Professor David Snider. The course fulfills a Humanities [H] general education requirement [GER]. Most often this course is open to upper classmen because of its popularity.
Required book: The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock and Roll: The Definitive History of the Most Important Artist and Their Music by Anthony DeCurtis (primary author).

Soc 150: Marital and Sexual Lifestyles [S,D]

3 credits

1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.OR 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

You will learn how to use your sociological imagination to explore the fascinating world of relationships.  The social factors and public policies that influence who we date, why we partner, whether or not we have children, and the consequences of ending relationships will be covered. We will also examine how race, class, and gender help us understand the diverse array of relationships and relationship patterns that have been observed over time. Your sociological imagination will provide you with a unique lens to see the relationship between our individual choices and the informal and formal social norms that shape these choices.

The course fulfills a Social Science [S] or American Diversity [D] general education requirement [GER]. Required Book: TBD

Univ 101 - Strategies from Creating Successful Cougars

1 credit

Lecture meets once a week from Noon to 1:00 p.m. and
Sundays 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

This course provides an opportunity for students to experience/practice services and strategies to help them become healthy successful college students. This course will help Summer Advantage students to:

  • Set realistic goals and develop useful skills for both academic and personal success
  • Budget and manage time, money, and credit
  • Examine critical thinking and academic honesty
  • Explore different teaching and learning styles
  • Improve your study, test taking, and communication skills
  • Examine positive health and relationship strategies
  • Build skills to increase competencies when working with other who are different than you
  • Develop character, responsibility, and develop social intelligence through experiential learning
