Adding and Dropping

Courses are added or dropped using myWSU. Deadlines for adding, dropping, and withdrawing from courses vary according to the duration of the course. Refer to the "Enrollment Change Deadlines." After the deadline to add a course section, undergraduate students must obtain an Enrollment Change Form and perform the following actions:

  • Obtain the appropriate signatures as indicated on the form
  • Pay full tuition and fees
  • Return the completed form to the Summer Session Office at French Administration Building, Room 346.
WSU no longer mails billing statements for tuition and fees. That information is readily available to all students on-line, 24 hours a day, seven days a week at myWSU portal, www.my.wsu.edu. It is imperative that you communicate your account information timely with your parents or any other party who may be making payments on your behalf. They won't have access to your account as that is private information that WSU can't share with anyone other than the student without written permission from the student. Contact Student Accounts for more information at (509) 335-9651. After 11:59 p.m. on May 6, students cannot drop their last or only summer course on myWSU; they must cancel their enrollment by contacting the Summer Session Office, French Administration Building, Room 346 or by calling (509) 335-2238.

Audit (no credit)

Students registering for credit have first priority for classes; auditors are enrolled on a space-available basis after a class begins. A maximum of two audits is allowed for Summer Session. To visit a class more than three times requires an audit approval. Audit enrollments will be recorded on the student’s transcript.

To audit, obtain an Enrollment Change Form, secure the appropriate signatures, pay full tuition and fees (there is not a special audit fee in the summer), and return the form to the Summer Session Office. Refunds are processed according to the deadline schedule. Refer to the "Enrollment Change Deadlines.

Cancellation of Enrollment

Cancellation of enrollment removes a student from ALL summer courses. Refunds are given for cancellations that follow the established refund deadline dates (see Enrollment Change Deadlines). After 11:59 p.m. on May 6, students cancel their enrollment online at www.cancel.wsu.edu.

Cancellation of your enrollment may affect your financial aid status. The cancellation of aid may result in you owing money to WSU, or in the repayment of aid being required, if the aid exceeds the amount of charges. Students who receive financial aid, loans, grants, scholarships, etc. should be aware that cancellation of financial aid will offset any refund to the student. Contact the Office of Financial Aid at (509) 335-9711 for complete details on how your cancellation may affect your current and future financial aid status.

Course Numbering System

Lower Division
# below 100 Courses do not carry University credit.
# 100-199 Courses (inclusive) are normally taken by freshmen.
# 200-299 Courses (inclusive) are normally taken by sophomores.
Upper Division
# 300-399 Courses (inclusive) are normally taken by juniors and seniors.
# 400-499 Courses (inclusive) are normally taken by juniors and seniors.
Graduate
# 500-599 Courses numbered 500-599 inclusive are primarily for graduate students. Qualified seniors may take these courses for graduate credit during their last year of Summer Session. Other qualified seniors may (with permission of their department chairs) take these courses for undergraduate credit.
# 600-800

Courses numbered 600-800 have as a prerequisite regular student status in the Graduate School.

Credit Load

The recommended credit load is no more than three credits in four weeks, six credits in six weeks or nine credits in eight weeks.

Because of the short duration of summer offerings, caution should be exercised when selecting the number of credits for each block. For example, nine credits taken in a six-week period is equivalent to 22.5 credits taken during a 15-week semester; six credits in a four-week period is equivalent to 24 credits in a 15-week semester.

Graduate students should contact the Graduate School, French Administration Building, Room 324, Washington State University, PO Box 641030, Pullman, WA 99164-1030, (509) 335-1446.

Disenrollment

Disenrollment occurs when all tuition and fees have not been paid by the end of the summer term. Students disenrolled from summer courses will be charged 100 percent of the full tuition owing at the time of disenrollment. Students are not dropped from courses for non-attendance and will be disenrolled for non-payment if they do not cancel their enrollment or drop their courses within the deadlines. A "W" will be marked on the student's transcript.

Final Exams

There is no formally designated final exam week for Summer Session. Final examinations will be given during class time the last week or day of instruction.

Grades and Transcripts

Students can view their summer grades on myWSU after August 4. Transcripts, which include all work taken at WSU, are sent upon request and will include all summer grades. The transcript fee is $4.95 per copy for regular service and $10.00 for rush delivery. All transcripts are official. Transcripts become unofficial if the sealed envelope is opened. Financial indebtedness to the University prevents the release of a student's transcript.

Minimum Credit Requirements

Pass/Fail

No course listed as meeting a General Education Requirement for graduation may be taken pass-fail by an undergraduate student.

A total of six courses may be completed on a pass-fail basis when initiating and completing work for a baccalaureate degree at WSU. The number of pass-fail courses a transfer student is allowed is determined on a pro rata basis.

An adviser’s signature is required to enroll for, add, or change a course from letter grade to pass-fail. Pass-fail enrollment is initiated by the student acquiring the appropriate signature on an Enrollment Change Form. Refer to the "Enrollment Change Deadlines."

Petitions for Exceptions to the Academic Calendar Deadlines

Students may, with payment of a service fee, petition for exceptions to the academic calendar deadlines for summer (i.e., withdrawal after the deadline to withdraw). Petitions are considered only in the case of extraordinary circumstances such as a medical emergency and require supporting documentation. Undergraduate and professional students petition through the Registrar's Office. Graduate students petition through the Graduate School. Requests for exceptions must be made within two years of the date of enrollment in the course.

Re-enrollment

Students re-enroll by obtaining a Request for Reinstatement Form from our office, paying a $50 re-enrollment fee, late payment fees, special course fees, and full tuition. Disenrolled students are required to re-enroll in all courses in which they originally registered. The "W" will be replaced with a grade for the course at the time all Summer tuition is paid.

Repeating a Course

Summer is considered one term. A course taken during one block may not be repeated during a later block of the same term.
